Remediation of VBA Code That Runs Under 64-bit MS Office Print E-mail

Just like Microsoft, our strong advice on what edition of Office 2010 to run is "32-bit"! The simple reason is that vast majority of the thousands of MS Office plug-ins are only available in 32-bit versions and probably will be for some time to come. On top of this reason is the need to evaluate all your VBA code to see if it needs some minor modifications to run on 64-bit. If you are planning on running 64-bit office, read on for links to help you ensure the compatibility of your existing VBA code (whether written by you or part of a third-party plug-in).

So you are preparing your first Windows 64-bit image or just dutifully customizing your own machine.  You copy your traditional set of DLLs to the System32 folder and execute regsrv32.exe against them.  To your horror you receive the error “RegSvr32  The module some.dll failed to load.  Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.  The specified module could not be found.”  Has your machine gone insane?  The file is plainly there in the System32 folder.  Let’s put it under the microscope.

Windows Installer Processes Your Windows 8 Appx Packages… SHHHHHHH! Print E-mail

If you visit the MSI SDK page, there is no “What’s New” section beyond version 5 which was released with Windows 7, so obviously there is nothing new in Windows Installer for Windows 8, right?  Nothing new for .MSI packages that is.  It has recently come to light in our labs that Windows Installer is secretly doing double duty to process the new Appx packages which are responsible for installing Windows 8 Metro WinRT Store Apps.  Why do I say “secretly”?

A while back I went to a Micrsoft Windows 8 developer event to learn the structure of Windows 8 Metro Apps.  During the install fest everyone could have assistance installing Windows 8 and Visual Studio.  For professional developers who don't usually have to start building their dev machine by loading an operating system, this was a huge help.  However, I was surprised to watch as the install fest tech led them through creating a physical partition for Windows 8, or if you really wanted it, he would help you configure a virtual machine.  There is a 3rd very compelling option and my guess is a lot of Administrators and Developers are not aware of the benefits - in fact is has all the key benefits of both of the other methods wrapped into one.  So let's talk about the benefits and give you some pointers on some how to articles.
